What to Bring on a Cartagena Boat Day: Practical Packing List

The essentials
Swimsuit or swim trunks; sunscreen; sunglasses; hat/cap; a light cover-up or UV shirt; phone; waterproof pouch/dry bag; ID; cash; and any prescription medication you need during the day.
A small bag is better than bringing half your hotel room onto the boat.
Bring cash—even if you plan to use cards
Major hotels and beach clubs may accept cards, but connectivity can fail and smaller vendors may be cash-only. Carry Colombian pesos in smaller denominations for extras and tips.
Do not carry more than you are comfortable managing around water.
Protect your phone
Boat spray, wet swimsuits and swim stops create more phone risk than most travelers expect. A waterproof pouch or dry bag is a cheap upgrade to the day.
If you are filming on the bow while the boat is moving, follow crew instructions and hold on safely; the best video is not worth a fall.
Sun protection matters more on the water
The sun reflects off the sea and there may be long periods without shade. Reapply sunscreen after swimming and consider a UV shirt if you burn easily.
Use products responsibly around reefs and avoid applying heavy sunscreen immediately before snorkeling if local guidance advises otherwise.
Shoes: keep them simple
Sandals or water-friendly shoes are useful for docks and coral/rocky shorelines. Many boats have their own footwear policy on deck, so ask before boarding.
There is rarely a reason to bring expensive shoes.
Motion sickness
If you know you are susceptible, prepare before the day rather than waiting until symptoms begin. Ask a healthcare professional about a medication or strategy that is appropriate for you.
Eating lightly, staying hydrated and looking toward the horizon can also help some travelers.
What to leave behind
Expensive jewelry, unnecessary electronics, passports unless specifically required, large hard-shell luggage and anything irreplaceable that cannot get wet.
The goal is freedom. The less you have to protect all day, the more you can swim.
