Rosario Islands by Private Boat: Complete Cartagena Guide

    What are the Rosario Islands?

The Rosario archipelago sits southwest of Cartagena inside the Corales del Rosario y San Bernardo National Natural Park. You will see different island counts online because small cays and islets are counted differently, but for a visitor the practical point is simpler: only a fraction of the archipelago is a normal tourist stop.

Some areas are private, protected, residential or not useful for a day visit. A good itinerary is not about “collecting islands.” It is about choosing the right water, lunch stop and atmosphere for your group.

How long does it take from Cartagena?

A speedboat typically reaches the Rosario area in roughly 45–60 minutes depending on departure point, sea conditions and the exact destination. Larger or slower vessels can take longer.

The ride itself is part of the experience, but Caribbean conditions matter. Morning water is often more comfortable; afternoon wind can make the return livelier. Your captain and the maritime authorities determine safe navigation conditions.

What can you actually do there?

Most private days combine three elements: time on the water, one or two chosen stops, and lunch. Swimming in clear water may be more memorable than spending the day stepping on and off docks.

Depending on conditions and interests, activities can include snorkeling, floating in calmer natural pools, visiting a beach club or hotel, stopping around Isla Grande, passing through mangrove areas, experiencing Cholón’s social scene, or continuing toward Barú.

Isla Grande: the most versatile base

Isla Grande is often a strong choice for travelers who want a balanced day. The island has established hotels, restaurants, beaches and access to reef/mangrove environments without requiring the entire day to become a party.

Families, couples and mixed groups often appreciate having real facilities for lunch and shade, then returning to the boat for swimming or another stop.

Cholón: choose it for the energy

Cholón is known for boats gathering in shallow water, music, drinks and a social atmosphere—especially on weekends and holiday periods. For groups who want that energy, it can be a highlight.

For families, quiet couples or people who dislike crowds, the same atmosphere may be the reason to spend only a short time there or choose a different stop. Neither choice is “better”; it is about fit.

Barú and Playa Blanca: not the same thing

Barú is the larger destination area; Playa Blanca is one famous beach on Barú. Private boats can use Barú as part of the day without making Playa Blanca the only objective.

Playa Blanca is beautiful but can be very busy at peak times. Timing matters. A later, shorter visit on a quieter weekday can feel very different from arriving with the main daytime rush.

How many stops should you plan?

For most private charters, two or three meaningful stops create a better day than trying to touch five locations. Every transfer uses time, and the point of a private boat is that you are allowed to stop when you are enjoying yourself.

A relaxed route might be: scenic cruise through the Rosario area, a swim/snorkel stop, lunch at an island restaurant, then one optional afternoon stop before returning to Cartagena.

    Park rules and responsible tourism

The islands are part of a protected marine ecosystem. Park authorities require visitor registration/induction procedures and currently require accident insurance for visitors. Entry rules and charges can change, so confirm the current process with your operator before the day.

Do not touch coral, remove marine life or treat protected areas like an amusement park. The best island day depends on the environment staying healthy.
