What Is the Best Island Near Cartagena? A Guide by Travel Style

Start with your group, not the island name
This is the question our team hears constantly: “What is the best island?” Our answer is almost always the same: it depends.
A family with small children and a group celebrating a birthday may both be going to the same archipelago, but they should not necessarily follow the same route. The right answer starts with pace, budget, food, music, water, shade and the age/profile of the group.
Best all-around: Isla Grande
Isla Grande is a practical favorite because it can work for many travel styles. You can find established hotels/restaurants, beach access, places to swim and nearby natural environments without committing to an all-day party scene.
Choose it when your group values facilities and a relaxed lunch but still wants the private-boat freedom to swim or make another stop.
Best for party energy: Cholón
Cholón is not subtle. It is a social anchorage where boats gather, music plays and groups often eat or drink in shallow water. That makes it ideal for some bachelorette, birthday and friend groups.
Go because you want the atmosphere, not because somebody told you every Cartagena boat must stop there. If the group wants quiet conversation and uncrowded water, another stop will probably make them happier.
Best for a famous beach look: Barú / Playa Blanca
Barú offers long stretches of Caribbean scenery and a large variety of beach experiences. Playa Blanca is the famous name, but it is only one part of Barú.
For travelers who care most about white sand, it can be worth including. The key is timing and choosing where on the coastline you spend your time, because the busiest central sections can feel very different from quieter zones or managed beach clubs.
Best for families: calm water + infrastructure
Parents usually care less about collecting island names and more about a comfortable ride, shade, bathrooms, safe swimming and predictable lunch. That often means combining a well-equipped restaurant/hotel stop with calmer water rather than spending hours in a crowded anchorage.
A private boat is useful because the crew can adjust the rhythm if children are tired, hungry or simply enjoying one place.
Best for snorkeling and water time: choose conditions, not branding
The best snorkeling stop changes with weather, visibility and local conditions. Reef areas around the Rosario Islands can be beautiful, but there is no responsible operator who can guarantee identical visibility every day.
Tell your operator that snorkeling is a priority. The day can then be designed around the conditions rather than around a fixed restaurant partnership.
Best for couples: fewer stops, more time
For couples, we usually prefer a slower itinerary: beautiful water, a good lunch, maybe one quiet beach or hotel, and enough unplanned time to enjoy the boat.
The luxury of a private day is not how many places you can say you visited. It is that nobody is rushing you away from the place you like.
Our recommendation philosophy
Boating Cartagena does not believe one itinerary should fit every customer. We ask what matters to you and recommend accordingly. The most valuable “local secret” is often not a hidden island—it is knowing which familiar island fits your specific day.
